Description
So, without too much ado, here is the basic prototype for the pair of new folding scythes, which I will début at the London MCM Expo in October 2015. This is the Stage 1 prototype, a proof-of-concept; at the time it was photographed, this was the first time it'd been near-completely assembled, and I just wanted to put up a progress report on what I've achieved so far. At this point not yet as fully-functional as I intend it to be, and still has a few mechanical steps before I can call it structurally complete, but this initial prototype is most of the way there now.
UPDATE 27.06.15: This version has now been shelved as an initial Stage 1 prototype, or Proof-of-Concept, for structural reasons - the haft of the scythe isn't thick enough to house all of the mechanisms, and those that it can house tend to interfere with each-other; there's just not enough room in there without making the wood dangerously-thin. I experimented briefly with cladding the existing haft with additional material, but it didn't pan out the way I hoped, so I've decided to abandon the hockey-stick base and move on to a custom-carved haft that can handle everything I need it to, instead.
The scythe is designed to be folded into a more compact form, so it can be stored away easily when not in use, and will feature two spring-loaded actions - one to move the blade, and one to move the staff - for the purpose of unfolding the scythe into a combat-ready position. The spring mechanism for the blade hasn't been installed yet; I'll be setting that up once the structural work on the staff is a bit more complete. The spring in the staff hasn't been properly pinned yet, either - that's next on the agenda, along with some tidying-up of the cuts. I plan to start work on the second scythe once the fitting stage of this one's assembly is complete.
Metal ruler included for scale; the haft is just a little over 60cms in length, and the blade is a little over 40cm from tip to base.
